About

America’s educational systems are on the cusp of transformative change as we struggle to create systems that foster creativity, collaboration, innovation and resilience. A new era is beginning, one that unites diverse educational resources in the real world and across the web. The American Alliance of Museums’ Center for the Future of Museums invites museum professionals, students, educators, parents and policy makers to use this site to explore potential futures for US education.

The Fellowship

This site is curated by Sage Xaxua Morgan-Hubbard, the American Alliance of Museums’ Ford W. Bell Fellow for Museums and P-12 Education. The Alliance established the Bell Education Fellowship to empower the museum field to shape the future of P-12 education in the US. Honoring the legacy of retiring Alliance President Dr. Ford W. Bell, Sage works within the Alliance’s Center for the Future of Museums to help museums increase their educational impact on the public through personalized, self-directed, passion-based, experiential learning. Read more about the Bell Education Fellow.

The Challenge

In 2015 the Center for the Future of Museums launched a national writing challenge that invited people to contribute their vision of an educational future for the US that includes museums at its core. We hope the resulting stories help museums prepare to play a new and bigger role in American education. The stories illustrate the “vibrant learning grid” described by educational forecasts such as the Alliance report Building the Future of Education: Museums and the Learning Ecosystem and KnowledgeWorks’ 2020 Forecast: Creating the Future of Learning.

American Alliance of Museums

The American Alliance of Museums has been bringing museums together since 1906, helping to develop standards and best practices, gathering and sharing knowledge, and providing advocacy on issues of concern to the entire museum community. Representing more than 30,000 individual museum professionals and volunteers, institutions and corporate partners serving the museum field, the Alliance is the only organization representing the entire scope of the broad museum community. Center for the Future of Museums

The Alliance’s Center for the Future of Museums (CFM) helps museums explore the cultural, political and economic challenges facing society and devise strategies to shape a better tomorrow. CFM is a think tank and research and design lab for fostering creativity and helping museums transcend traditional boundaries to serve society in new ways. One of CFM’s areas of focus is the role museums will play in shaping the next era of education. For more information, visit www.futureofmuseums.org.
